Today, we are talking about how to stop eating when you’re not even hungry. This is the final video in a series on how to stop being controlled by food. Hi, I’m Kay Loughrey, nutritionist and dietitian in Maryland helping you build a healthy relationship with food. So far in this series, we have shown you a number of things. The five steps, the triggers, food cravings, how to slow down and pause instead of overeating, and how to tap into what you truly want that usually has nothing to do with food.

Now, today we’re talking about the fifth step. What is your best option instead of turning to food when you’re not even hungry? We’re featuring Jenny, one of my past, weight loss coaching clients. Jenny’s trigger was when she walked in the door after work and into the kitchen. Then her food cravings started, and she ate all the way through cooking dinner. We helped Jenny create strategies to disrupt old patterns. We shared some of these strategies in previous videos when we covered the first four steps.

For the fifth step, what was Jenny’s best option, the option that made all the difference? She needed a way to deal with the stress of the day. What worked best for her? When she walked in the door, she immediately walked up the stairs, changed her clothes, did about five minutes of relaxed breathing and that was how she was best able to let go of the stress of the day instead of continuing the old pattern of overeating. She told me afterwards that, after mastering this new habit, she no longer felt controlled by food. The reason for her newfound freedom was that she no longer ate while she cooked dinner.
