Hi, I’m Gaithersburg Nutritionist, Kay Loughrey and I help people build a healthy relationship with food. We’re starting a new year and may want to feel and look healthier. So, how do we get started with that healthy relationship with food? A number one issue that I see with my clients and I have had myself is the problem of eating while distracted and eating quickly. In your household when you were growing up, do you remember having a competition with who can eat the fastest? Well, that’s what happened in, in my household, for sure. Otherwise you didn’t get enough to eat. So it becomes a habit to eat quickly and that habit can contribute to gaining weight. Then, instead of being mindful about what we’re eating, we’re kind of mindless and distracted. We may be on the computer. Maybe you’re eating lunch but don’t even notice what we’re eating. And that makes it very difficult for our brain to tell us when we’re full because it takes our brain about 15 minutes of eating to register that, yes, I’m starting to get full. Ok. Now, I am full and I’m going to stop eating. This is one of the biggest tricks that I share with my clients about how to build a healthy relationship with food and how to break a habit that that is very destructive to us and leads to overeating. Another little tip to actually enjoy the process of eating. Notice: how does the food taste? What’s the texture? What’s the temperature just actually enjoy eating? Imagine that?
