Welcome. Hello, I am Kay Loughrey, Gaithersburg nutritionist and dietitian helping you build a healthy relationship with food. This is Part Two of a video series on the 5 Steps to Stop being Controlled by Food. In the first video we gave you an overview of all five steps and now we’re breaking down each step. Step one is the trigger to overeating. How does the ball get rolling with overeating? We may overeat while distracted and don’t even realize what we’re doing. Maybe we weren’t even hungry.
Let’s look at Jenny as an example. She was constantly thinking about food, her weight, and her negative mood. She felt desperate. When she came to see me as a client, she told me her challenge was the stress from work and her older parents who she talked with every night to help them solve problems.
What happened to trigger Jenny’s sense of frustration with overeating after work? She had worked all day, drove home, came in the door, was going to make dinner. She walks in the kitchen. Walking into the kitchen is her trigger to overeating. Once she walks in the kitchen, she snacks all the way through cooking the meal and then she sits down to dinner and eats a full meal. Once again she has over eaten and she’s filled with regret. In Part 3 we’ll find out more about how Jenny solves this problem and stops feeling controlled by food.
