Hi, I’m Maryland, dietitian and nutritionist, Kay Loughrey. Today I’m here to talk about why diets make things worse. When Julie called me for help with weight loss, this is what she told me. She said, “When I first started dieting, I was 140 pounds. Five diets later, I’m 225 pounds. I’d just like to get back to the 140 pounds where I started. This example illustrates the heartbreaking reality of dieting. What happens is that 80% of dieters fail to keep the weight off that they lost, but even worse, they on average, gained an additional 7 pounds after each diet. If you lost 50 pounds on a diet, then you’d gain the 50 back plus another 7 pounds. The problem is that we are worse off after each diet, and this is the reason why I offer a lifestyle change approach. I offer a comprehensive lifestyle change approach and help people build a healthy relationship with food so they can live at a live a happy life at a healthy weight instead of dieting.
